The term Lean Production was first introduced as an offshoot of JIT (Just in Time) system. The JIT was a successful approach in US and other countires. JIT refers to producing and moving the right product at the right volume at right time.
The basic idea of TPS is to probe and expose as many potential problems as possible through the concept of minimizing inventory level of Materials, Works-In-Process and Finished Goods. By doing so, a company would have maximized improvement gained for the system and thus enhance its competitive capability.
